Model of business
Jerry’s mobile app allows users to compare and buy insurance, primarily for vehicle insurance, but also for home insurance. Jerry generates revenue by earning a percentage of premiums when consumers purchase insurance policies from insurance carriers using artificial intelligence and machine learning. Jerry has developed a “super app” that provides services related to maintenance, financing, repairs, warranties, and parking. All fifty states of the United States can use the app for free. As of August 2021, the company is an insurance broker for approximately 1 million customers in the U.S.
Our history
Jerry was founded in 2017 by Art Agrawal, Musawir Shah, and Lina Zhang. The company launched its mobile app in January 2019. Currently, Agrawal, who previously founded YourMechanic, is Jerry’s chief executive officer (CEO). Since 2021, Shah and Zhang have been serving as the company’s chief technology officer and vice president of operations, respectively.
In 2019, Jerry expanded into Lockport, New York from Palo Alto, California. In August 2021, the company had 186 employees. Approximately 60 of the 70 Lockport employees work at a call center housed in Harrison Place, a building formerly operated by Harrison Radiator Corporation, which is now part of the Western New York Incubator Network and managed by University at Buffalo Business and Entrepreneur Partnerships. As of 2021, Jerry will also have an office in Toronto.
Between 2019 and 2020, Jerry’s revenue increased tenfold. Jerry published a report on driver performance in 2021 based on data about violations.
Funds
Since 2017, Jerry has raised $132 million in venture capital. The $28 million Series B round was led by Goodwater Capital in May 2021. Other angel investors included Johnson Cook and Timothy Sheehan (president and CEO of Greenlight, respectively), Brandon Krieg and Ed Robinson of Stash, Jon McNeill (Lyft, Tesla, DVx Ventures), and Jay Vijayan. Jerry raised an additional $75 million in a Series C round in August, valuing his company at $450 million. Bow Capital, Highland Capital Partners, Kamerra, and Park West Asset Management also participated in the round.

They’ll offer you something better than possible to draw you in, then keep adding on fees. The app which grades your driving is also not very great, it grades you poorly for touching your screen even if you are pulled over and parked. My rating has gone down severely over the last weekend because I’ve been studying between Lyft rides which is ridiculous.”
