The Dan insurance history

Divers know that if an emergency occurs, they can trust a team devoted to helping them respond, get to the hospital or chamber safely, and provide guidance to first responders and medical professionals. In the past 40 years, divers have known that medical information and emergency support are always just a phone call away.

More than 50,000 dive emergencies have been handled by Divers Alert Network (DAN) medics during the 325,000+ hours the hotline has been operational.

However, that was not always the case.

In the past, injured divers often had to wait a long time to receive appropriate treatment, and as we know today, time is of the essence when responding to dive injuries. Recreational divers had little access to recompression facilities, and not many physicians in the United States were trained in dive medicine.

Divers seeking work and play beneath the sea have pushed the need for improved diving injury response medical education to an all-time high.

A partnership between the U.S. military, government organizations, and the Undersea Medical Society led to the founding of the National Diving Accident Network (NaDAN) at Duke University Medical Center in 1980. To respond to calls from injured divers, NaDAN – which would later become DAN – established an emergency hotline.

DAN continued to expand its support to the diving industry, resulting in an increase in calls, many of which were non-emergency calls. Therefore, DAN set up the medical information line (+1-919-684-2948) so divers can ask questions about medical conditions, medications, surgery, dental issues, or even just consultations about diving safety.

After its grant funding ended three years later, DAN transformed into a membership organization to continue funding medical interventions, safety guidelines, and emergency and medical information lines.

It published Alert Diver the following year. The first edition was an 8-page newsletter that has since grown to be the widest distributed diving publication containing 116 pages of safety guidelines and scenarios, FAQs, scientific insights, and inspiration for every kind of diver.

By helping divers afford the costly treatment associated with diving injuries, DAN took the next important step in protecting the dive community in 1987. While vital, directing divers to the specific therapeutics required to treat dive injuries such as decompression sickness is incredibly costly. In addition to establishing the first dive accident insurance program, DAN has grown over the years. DAN’s insurance program currently offers three tiers of coverage as well as up to US$150,000 in emergency evacuation assistance to help divers reach medical care from remote locations.  Additionally, DAN offers travel insurance, helping divers cover all their adventures, whether they are diving or not.

Founded in 1990 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, DAN’s official mission is to assist divers in need of medical emergency assistance and promote dive safety through research, education, products, and services.

Since my wife wasn’t allowed in the hospital. DAN was her third party information and support. They stayed in touch, AIG (the actual insurance through DAN)did not for our hospital stay, compression chamber or ambulance, AIG denied all my medical expenses as they said they would but they did help with extended time at a hotel and our flight back to California.
I have been with DAN over 20 years and this is the first time I have used their services. They are great folks and I highly recommend their service if you know how to use it.

    I have to edit my review. After Dan saw my posting regarding the insurance round around I was receiving from “Travel Guard”, the insurance carrier Dan contracts the travel insurance through, they contacted me within 12 hours of the posting and I was speaking with a Dan representative the next day. Robin (awesome gal) had my issue resolved within days when I had been dealing with Travel Guard for many weeks. Not only has my faith has been renewed in Dan for resolving & helping divers, but my doubts about purchasing travel insurance through Dan have been laid to rest. I have been told that they are looking to other insurance companies to handle their travel insurance in the future. Thanks Divers Alert Network and especially Robin for all your hard work. It is appreciated!!

    I have been a member of DAN for decades, and many years ago added my two minor children who beame certified each at the age of 10 to the insurance program. I had an automatic renewal program and used to recieve advance notice of renewal. My children are no longer minors, and my son for over a year no longer lives at home at his whereabouts are unknown. On Sept. 28, I found a notice in my SPAM filter that DAN had renewed my insurancefor myself and my two children. It was dated Sept. 25. I immediately Emailed them not to renew my son, and recieved no reply. I sent another email and went back and forth with the Manager of Membership Relations informing me that they would not refund the charge for his memeberhip and would not cancel his insurance without his signature. Since I paid for the family membership I believe it is my right to cancel a family member at any time. I also believe it would have been appropriate to receive a reminder notice about the automatic renewal prior to it happening. I received no such notice. I am sorry to see DAN turn so beaurocratic that they do not consider each individual situation, understand the circumstances, and take appropriate action. This type of attitude is not what DAN says it stands for. I hope the appropraite party will take note and do something about this type of administrative rigidity. It is totally the opposite of what the personal and medical side of the staff demonstrate and represent.
